O'siyo Brothers and Sisters!

These are interesting and confusing times.

Lost tribes and lost languages are being resurrected, while other tribes and languages are slipping toward oblivion. What are you doing to keep your language and culture alive? Are you helping or shunning your elders, those precious wisdom keepers?

The Osage just won a court case that they hope will ensure and broaden their sovereignty. The Republic of Lakotah has drawn interest and support throughout the world for the public withdrawal from treaties with the United States - treaties that were repeatedly broken by the United States.

Those same issues with broken treaties is also what is behind the standoff at New Caledonia in Canada.

Yet, as you read this, the Bush Administration is conspiring to deep-six one of the longest enduring treaties - The Jay Treaty. The Bushies and their Troy counterparts in Canada claim this long recognized treaty that grants Mohawk, Tulalip and others unrestricted crossing of the US/Canada border also enables foreign agents similar access. No one has told us how these agents, bent on destruction, are going to obtain Tribal Enrollment Cards, which any real wannabee can tell you do not fall off trees.

In these new and confusing times remember your prophesies and do your best to stand strong in support of your people, your culture, your tribe, your elders and all Tribal and First Nations who face these same struggles.

We must stand together.

"No one should die for want of a drink of water." -- Mike Wilson, Tohono O'odham

As historian Patricia Nelson Limerick summarized in "The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West...
"Set the blood quantum at one-quarter, hold to it as a rigid definition of Indians, let intermarriage proceed as it had for centuries, and eventually Indians will be defined out of existence. When that happens, the federal government will be freed of its persistent 'Indian problem.'"

Once a language is lost, it is gone forever. Of the 300 original Native languages in North America, only 175 exist today. * 125 of these are no longer learned by children. * 55 are spoken by 1 to 6 elders; when they die, their language will disappear. * Without action, only 20 languages will survive the next 50 years.
