Just when I was sure that running winter/holiday needs in this editorial section was no longer serving a real purpose I received one request two weeks ago. Then, this one arrived in my mail Thursday evening December 13.
As long as there is a cry for help in Indian Country it will be included.
Please help the following and all such requests as you can.

Subj: Toys needed at all Indian Centers in USA
All Indian Centers have sent a Plea for Toys and Food. I Know That The Heart Of America Indian Center In KCMO is in need
but so is the AIC in Chicago and the Center in Ohio that I already sent out and even Springfield, MO is in need. Here is a reason for
one of the problems. But please even if you are not able to to send anything, say a prayer for those in need in our community.
God Bless and Happy Holidays. Be glad for what we have, so many do not...

Subj: FW: Toy Drive - Please forward
As most of you realize, many of our Marines are doing a tour of duty overseas. This leaves few Marines locally to conduct the annual Toys for Tots Program. Each year, the Indian Center has submitted our numbers to the Marines Toys for Tots Program in which we receive the toys and distribute them to our customers who are in need during this holiday season. This year, due to the low manpower, they are not able to fulfill several of our requests. Therefore, we are conducting our own (late) toy drive. We are in need of toys for 80 boys and 80 girls all between the ages of 0-14 years of age.
If your business is doing a toy drive or if you individually want to donate, please think of the Indian Center as a place to donate (if you haven't already committed them elsewhere). As always, we appreciate your thoughtfulness and willingness to give to those less fortunate.
We send many blessings and prayers to the Marines and other servicemen fighting overseas. Prayers also go out to those less fortunate for peace this season. And Happy Holidays to all of you and thank you for your extreme generosity. We are honored to have such wonderful friends of the Center. - Patti Hibbeler

These notices have come in late, and have been put up later, but there is no time limit or date when we must stop giving. ~ Stone Woman

As historian Patricia Nelson Limerick summarized in "The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West...
"Set the blood quantum at one-quarter, hold to it as a rigid definition of Indians, let intermarriage proceed as it had for centuries, and eventually Indians will be defined out of existence. When that happens, the federal government will be freed of its persistent 'Indian problem.'"

Once a language is lost, it is gone forever. Of the 300 original Native languages in North America, only 175 exist today. * 125 of these are no longer learned by children. * 55 are spoken by 1 to 6 elders; when they die, their language will disappear. * Without action, only 20 languages will survive the next 50 years.
