ABOUT THE MUSIC SECTION...

For a long time now we at The Nest have wanted to have a section about Native American music. It would seem an easy task and very straight forward. We could have article/articles about the music; article/articles about the instruments...no problem. It was no problem with the Kachinas, Baskets, Clothing, etc.

So why is it so hard to create a Music section? Why didn't we do it sooner?

Music is in the heart of the Native American. One doesn't think about it, one feels it. Music touches our hearts in ways that words cannot explain. It is the Universal language, but it has no words.

We must find the "words" to help others that want to understand. Music is an integral part of the Native American life, not only the music made with instruments, but also the music of nature.

We at the Nest are not musicians, though we love music. For us to write words about what others experience or feel when creating music or instruments, seems to be an injustice to all of those that do create.

Throughout the website information is given, and then we point our visitors in the direction of more information. This section will strive to do the same. But this time we are asking the help of others to give the information and do the pointing...

AN INVITATION...TO MUSICIANS, INSTRUMENT MAKERS, DANCERS and THOSE THAT KNOW ABOUT THE MUSIC...

We invite all of you who play Native Americans instruments; make Native American instruments; know about Native Amercian music; and/or Native American Dance, to send us your stories or information.

Anything that is contributed and used on this website will have full credit given to the person responsible for it along with links to their sites. We will also include any information about the contributor, that is sent with the contribution.

Remember the point here is to help others understand the culture and to keep the music alive for many generations to come. This will be a place where others can come and learn from you, the ones who "are" the music and the dance.

We won't be including music files on this website, but we will have links to sites that have music samples and examples. Pictures will be included if you want to send a picture with your article.

This is your place to speak and teach. The section will become what you make it.

THE BEGINNING...

I don't know where this section is going...but I know how it is beginning...

It begins with stories from the wonderful and talented artist composer, John De Boer. Reading the stories and then using the links to listen to the music, one can well understand what the music is to John. As he says "Music is not just something that I do… music is everything that I am.... “. John ends his emails with this wonderful phrase--"We all have a song inside us, it tells us who we are."

We at the Nest are honored to have John De Boer as the first of many contributors to this section. The Edge of the World by John De Boer.
