I first visited this site, November 20, 2001 and simply felt that this early Native American photographer had to be showcased, along with his now historical work.
Richard Albert Throssel (1882-1933) was born in Marengo, Washington, of French Canadian and Cree Indian descent. Throssel moved to the Crow Indian reservation in southeastern Montana in 1902……Throssel was adopted by the Crow tribe in 1905 and given the name of Esh Quon Dupahs, or "Kills Inside the Camp."
Included here, are various photos taken by Mr. Throssel, or as I am sure he was much more fond of being known as: Esh Quon dupahs/Kills Inside the Camp. As well, you will see scans of the original manuscript that he wrote regarding the Crow process of Naming.
Enjoy! I sure did!
