Susan BatesTLINGET SOLDIER WOUNDED IN IRAQ
Army Specialist Latseen Benson, a Tlinget from Alaska, was looking forward to returning home in October. But his tour of duty was extended due to the "stop - loss" policy the military had instituted. While serving his extended tour, Benson fell victim to a roadside bomb. Today he is a patient at Walter Reed Medical Center, trying to recover from the blast which cost him both legs and put him into a coma.
The Alaska Native Heritage Center is collecting donations to help the family be with their son. It is hoped Specialist Benson will be able to leave the hospital by summer. If you would like to donate some money to help this family you can write the Alaska Native Heritage Center, 8800 Heritage Center Drive, Anchorage, Alaska 99506 or phone them at 907-330-8000.

CHIPPEWA INDIANS REGAIN SACRED ITEMS
The Bois Forte Band of Chippewa Indians prevailed in their battle to reclaim nine sacred items held by the American Museum Of Natural History. The items, stolen from the People 102 years ago, include 3 birch bark rolls and 6 other items.
"Phyllis Boshey, an elder and former tribal council member, said the three birch bark rolls and six other items had been held prisoner by the American Museum of Natural History. 'These objects are like spirits. They should not be locked up,' she told a reporter for The Minneapolis Star Tribune.
The birch bark rolls and other items are sacred to the Ojibwe Midewiwin medicine society and can only be interpreted by certain members of the society and are not to be shown publicly.
The museum denies that the rolls were ever put on display.

A new "Indian Movie" has been released this holiday season for your viewing enjoyment. The Minneapolis Star Tribune says that Christmas In The Clouds is the "first mainstream romantic comedy to feature an almost exclusively American Indian Cast."
This funny "feel good" movie stars Graham Greene (Oneida), Timothy Vahle (Choctaw), Wes Studi (Cherokee), Sheila Tousey (Menominee/Stockbridge-Munsee), among others.
Treat yourself to a good time!

I want to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I am going to spend the holiday season in New Orleans with my kids, but if the mold doesn't kill me or the levees break, I'll be back again next year.
