On August 25, 2006, a rare white buffalo calf was born on the Dave Heider farm near Janesville, Wisconsin. The odds are about a million to one that a buffalo will be born white, yet this is the third white buffalo that has chosen to come to the Heiders.
In 1994, the white buffalo named Miracle was born there. Tens of thousands of people flocked to the Heider Farm to pay homage to the Sacred Buffalo who many believed fulfilled the Brule Sioux prophesy of White Buffalo Calf Woman.
According to Crow Dog, a Medicine Man, "This Holy Woman brought the Sacred Buffalo Calf Pipe to the Sioux. There could be no Indians without it. Before she came, people didn't know how to live. They knew nothing. The Buffalo Woman put her sacred mind into their minds." As she left, she promised to return again to help the People.
Miracle's death in 2004 caused many to wonder if she was indeed the fulfillment of the prophesy. But if you think about it, didn't most prophets throughout history appear, deliver their message and then go back, leaving behind a promise to return before the end of days?
A second white calf was born in 1996 but lived only a few days. After Miracle died, the Heiders went back to their ordinary lives, shut down the gift shop and plowed up the parking lots. But the birth of this buffalo, named Miracle's Second Chance, will probably change their plans. Mr. Heider found the baby after a severe thunderstorm hit the area.
Second Chance's mother was recently purchased from a Missouri farm and his father was a 10 month old bull buffalo who was very unruly and considered dangerous. Heider had him butchered before the birth of the new white calf. Two more buffalo cows were bred to him.
There are quite a few white buffalos in the world right now, but some of them are albinos while many others are a cross between a buffalo and a Charolais which often results in a white animal.
According to the prophecy, the true white buffalo will begin life as white, then the coat will change to represent each of the other colors of man; yellow, red and black before returning to brown. Miracle fulfilled that promise.
Perhaps Miracle's Second Chance will help more People find their way back to the Good Red Road and the promise that lies there.
