BROUGHT TO YOU BY SNOWWOWL.COM A NON-COMMERCIAL NATIVE AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL WEBSITE HURRICANE KATRINA ONLY A WARNING
September 2, 2005
Susan BatesAs I write this, our nation is still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The scenes I am watching on television are of things I'd expect to see only in a war torn nation.
While the New Orleans area dodged a direct hit from the storm itself, the massive storm surge that hit afterward destroyed whole sections of the city and cost countless lives. The most sickening thing of all though, is watching people suffer and die because no one has come to help them in time.
I cannot fathom why or how a nation who is so paranoid about being attacked by terrorists that they won't allow people to take nail clippers onboard of airplanes and who has devoted billions of dollars into preparedness for a terrorist attack, cannot get their act together enough to evacuate sick, elderly and dying people from the storm ravaged area.
New Orleans sits below sea level. Billions of dollars have been invested in pumps to keep the water out of the city. A complex levee system runs for hundreds of miles, enabling the land to be inhabited. I wish someone could explain to me how in the world the people who are supposed to be on top of these situations could have been caught flat footed on this one. And please tell me why we can fly aid to people in foreign countries faster than we can get help to our own???
This event is going to change our lives forever. My son's house, which sits on the west bank of Lake Ponchitrane, is rebuildable. But both he and his wife have lost their jobs as have hundreds of thousands of other people. There will be no electricity or clean water to drink for weeks - maybe months. The worst danger they're in now is from the hoards of looters who are breaking into stores, churches, schools and homes and taking what they want, then burning the buildings. The police have their hands full just defending their stations. Citizens, who have waded water polluted with raw sewage and decomposing corpses, huddle near buildings, hungry, frightened, sick and dying, praying no one will shoot them.
We are witnessing the total break - down of our society. This storm is only a part of the earth changes Creator is bringing about in preparation for moving us into the next world. While nothing will stop the process, we can and should pay attention to the warnings He gives us and try to put ourselves and our families into the best possible position to survive them.
There is much to do to help the people who have survived. We will all have to pitch in to get the job done. If you can do nothing else, at least pray for the orphans of the storm.<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
