i found this web page because i was looking for something on white owls. one flew over my friends home twice screeching. i thought to look up any legends on this. in the process i've come to learn about other legends and stories. i've been sitting at my computor for 2 hours and i'm facinated by this. i used to go to el cerritos college and on my way home i used to stop by a native american store "black horse" well the long of the short is that one of my signs is the owl well for him this was not good. i felt quite uncomfortable after this so i stpped going about 2 yaers later i passed by there again, needless to say the store was gone. boy i really felt bad after that i guess being an owl is bad luck. but not according to some of the tribes. i'ld like it if some one can tell me more good things about owls. i am having a difficult time trying to understand tribes, legnds, and stories. thank you, laura

I just read about the Redwoods and Sequioas. I have been there and the trees are the most amazing things besides the panet itself. The trees have an amazing energy and aura about them, one would wounder why people cut and hurt these plants even still to this day. I had the honor to climb a couple of the Redwoods in California and felt the awsome power and energy of the trees, while up in their branches, and the views were just great too. Thank you for having such an awsome web site

Very interesting. I am homeschooling my kids and am basically a wasichu. I am mostly white. I have no ties that I am aware of to the Lakota, Dakota, or the Nakota in blood. However....I am very interested in the history and appalled by it. I teach my kids everything I can find out about the horrible things that happened and I at times am ashamed of my race. I knew a man similar to me who honored the inipi ceromonies and worshipped wankantanka. Hurt is in my heart for the evil done

Your site is truly amazing I came across it by accident while looking into my family history, my many times great grandmother set sail to "the Americas" in the 1600's age 6. She married to in a tribe in the East somewhere at about 15, but some how she ended up back in Ireland with two children when she was about 28. Her diary has been in the family but never read for many years out of fear of damaging it. I've been trying to find which tribe for over a year now and your map of tribal areas really helped me...I only have a few more years of research to now :-D, but at least I have a place to start,..so thank you, Thank you very much,..Anne

I was fortunate enough to be granted permission from the local leaders to visit Stronghold Table accompanied by a pair of local men. My family and I were saddened to hear about the conflict going on between the stewards of the land and the NPS. It has been 5 years since our visit and I think of this place often. Has anything changed? Has the ammunition clearing been finished?..It was a wonderful lesson for my son to learn, hearing the story of the Ghost Dancers from the beautiful elderly woman who ran the local diner. I can tell you that day was the most memorable of our 4 week tour of the Northern Rockies and Dakotas.

All the credit to you for putting together such a wonderful web site about American Indians whom we here in Turkey dearly love and respect as we believe on evidence that our ancestors are common from the plains, mountains and forests of Asian Continent. Presumably migration of your ancestors from Bering straits to North America goes back nearly 12000 years and so as the first members of Shamanic Asian Tribesmen's migration to Anatolia. By the way I have seen no evidence of an ''unsafe'' nature in your web site contrary to what Yahoo search engine has alleged...Again I express my deepest sympathy to American Indians and thank you for the valuable information you have made available to people like myself...With best regards..Mehmet Ertuzun

I just got back from the reunion at Red Clay Park and it was very touching. During your speech I had to hold back the tears and anger. I thank you so much for being there and the work you have done. I think because of my visit there my path will be more focused. I am 54 years old and grew up in East Tennessee,I could never trace my ancestery but always belived that I was Cherokee. It seemed I just knew inside. No one in my family would help with the search ,they did not want to be Indian. They have all past now so they will never know . I believe it is what is in your heart not what you can prove...I have a 22 month old son and I will teach him the Indian ways and he will have to make his own path. His name is Michael Wolf Johnson so I did help him a little with his name...Please acccept my thanks and take care. You have made a big differance for us..

Found my way to this site through a search of Sinte Gleska University. Enjoy the info in the news articles. One article put me in touch with two men who could help me to help the keepers of the sacred pipe of the Lakota. I am not rich but it gives me a chance to give support of what has been given so generously to all of us...Waste,it is good.

Thank you, thank you for having this web site!! My daughter and granddaughter have Native ancestors (through their father) but aren't curious about learning about their ancestry. I came here looking for any and all powwows near Oakland CA - to expose them to their "peeps" and hopefully initiate a desire to learn more about their heritage. Again, thanks!!

I recently came into possession of a magnificent Buffalo Cow with Calf red clay pipe (with stem, beads, redish eagle feathers) signed by r. rose-bear. It was presented to an Uncle of mine (who served in WWII with Robert Rosebear's father)during a visit to Minnesota many years ago. None of his 3 sons wanted the pipe, so it was offered to me. I am most grateful to be the Keeper of this pipe made by a famous American Indian Artist. Thank you for your site. I would like any information you might have on Rbt Rosebear.

Thanks again from the depths of my spirit. May mother earth find the healing she so deserves through the diligence and love of the people who respect her and the generations to come. I am a descendant of the Taino Indians of Puerto Rico, I know they say that we (Puerto Ricans) all are descendants but my great-grandfather was a member of the tribe. I married a man from South Dakota whose lines stem from the Sioux Nation and I do not believe his family taught him of his heritage. I wanted you to know that I am happy to have come across your site. It helps me show him how hard it trully was on the Native American after the White Man came. Not many believe the struggle and think that it was a choice by the Native American to "move " off their land to make way for the White Man. They don't teach the struggle enough in the American schools and I find that to be a sorry fact. I know from my family that it was hard on our people on the island and as a child I hated learning of the otrosities forced upon the Native American seeing as they were never depicted with full truth. I want to thank you for putting up this web site. Hopefully other non tribal members will learn of your site and show it to their children so that they may know the truth.

Great site and information. Does your site have a way to look up past tribe memberships? I was once a member of the North East Alabama tribe Near Fort Payne, Ala. My mother Judith Anne Hinds Evatt, was the one who gathered the family records and submitted them to the tribe. I have since lost contact with the tribe and family papers can not be located.

Just a quick hello from Vancouver, BC. Never been to the arctic but always wanted to. Just wondering how people cope with 24 hours of darkness during the winter months. It must make people extremely depressed? By the way, I find this website very interesting and hopefully one day I might come and visit but only during the summer months. Never experienced a midnight sun and that must be so cool.

First I would like to say that I truly feel that "We were wrong". Our "leaders" in there infinate wisdom, or lack there of, gave no thought to what they were doing to a proud people. I know that I can never undo the wrongs done to the native American people but I can say that I am sorry. Sorry for the stupidity of the leaders of our past. Sorry for the inhumanity that was thrust upon the proud Sioux people...It has become an obvious pattern for our "leaders" to just take what they want and tell others how they will think. And if the others do not comply then our "leaders" simply destroy the lands and the people...I have begun to do research into the cultures of various native American tribes and I have found that all tribes were once a proud people before the inrotduction of "the white mans ways". We thought we had a better way of doing things, but as history has shown us, we do not have a clue, and probably never will...I would consider it an honor to learn all that I can about the honorable Sioux people. I think that others should too...Again, I can never attempt to change the past horrors done to the Sioux people, but I can say that from at least this "white man", I am forever sorry... Thank you for your time...Submitted with the utmost respect and humblness,..Rick Clayton

Your site brought me to my knees in thanks of the beauty it portrayed. I have not yet explored all of it, but I filly intend to. The music is beautifully haunting and spiritually uplifting. I have great interest in the Sioux nation and want to learn all I can including how to speak the language. The song Cry For a Vision is awesome as I had the honor to be in the prescence of wolves and hearing their voices again brought back that beautiful memory. I hope to see them again one day. I so appreciate your site as it has been most beneficial to the research I needed in writing a story for an assignment for the Institute of Children's Literature. My ancestors are Native Americans but not Blackfeet. I have always been proud of my heritage. I feel that First Nation people have been ill-represented in the federal government. Now is the time, before it's too late, to hear "nature's voice" through the teachings of Native Americans. Please keep up your good efforts. My prayers are with you.

I googled "smudge" and pick your site, basiclly because it sounded most authintic to me. I am wondering if I am able to get copies in order to preform or find someone who can teach me in this area? Once again,Thank you..."Stands with the Salmon"

I may be a white American Female but i do love the american indian! I know what it is to love the american eagle and the wind, the sun and the earth! You have a connection to the true gifts of this earth that many take for granted. I for one live to watch the magestic sun rise each morning and feel renewed life breathe through me! A brand new day given that i trully am greatful for but this day and age no one takes the time to just stop and behold the gift! Such a sad world ! Thank you for letting me post my comment! I have never liked or trusted Yahoo; but I am surprised that McAfee has stooped so low. White people tend to dislike and distrust anyone who is not sparklingly white. What a shame. I am ashamed of what the whites have done to the Native Americans and Afro-Americans in the USA. Land of the Free? Land of domination, more like. White people have done great things but everywhere we go we try to subjugate the indigenous peoples. We could learn much from Native Americans if we would only listen with respect.

Hello there,I find it completely ironic that a machine is flagging your site as unsafe. I've switched out my Anti-Virus software and notified the company by email...This email address I use is just a spam filter; I keep the real one safe & sound. If everyone got smart and just used a free web e-mail for things your sure spam will come from, it would make things smoother...anyway, I googled your site while trying to find the meaning of something an uncle left to me when he died...He was very devout, and left me a tomahawk necklace as well as the same style necklace with an arrow head as well,.I was just really trying to find if there was any meanings to them other than just being tools..Thanks! - Joe

I happened upon this web site when looking for whale recipes. I have spent 2 hours pouring over all the recipes, artwork, angry owl comments and just amazed at what you have here. I would say in my life, in Ohio, ( and I live on Osage St! ) that my life is far removed from American Indians. Unfortunately, I have been conditioned by tv and media, to believe that American Indians have been assimilated into society. I am shocked to find that is not true, on the whole. I think it is horrifying that people on the Eastern part of U.S. are not aware of this, and that, despite our hometown major league baseball is named "Cleveland Indians". With an Indian on the logo. ( I would love to know how that transpired). I am a busy mom, and going to school fulltime, and work too, but I will be studying your site, and all its info, for some time to come. Thank you for such and amazing site! It is chock full of Indian culture, lore, recipes, artistry, talant, information, links , and opinions.

I am ashamed of our goverment,I believe all soverenty and rights and land should be given back as much as possible,as well as the sacred black-hills too that were stole too by our greedy government.

I thought it was very informative, and it makes me want to cry to see what the white man's government has put the only true american through, and that they can still sleep at night without a thought about what they have done. may you and all of your people be blessed

I live on the Nez Perce reservation, but am not a member. I have visited Teh LaPa Low Cemetery here where there is a very old tombstone (2?) of Chief Looking Glass. Was his grave moved here?

This is a wonderful site, very informative. I have reacently had a past life regretion and my life was as a native indian woman. It was amazing I had never even thought about indians until now. I had names through the regretion but I was amazed to find the names on this site and which tribe and the meaning. Amazing.

I just finished reading Snow Owls Feathers. He has touched my heart with his words. I do not know if this wise man is a holy man or not. If not he is blessed by the great spirit and should be heard. I am a 57yr old female who is very proud of my Comanche heritage. I cannot prove linage and do not wish to. I know what is in my heart. I cannot help what I look like. but, my heart is 100% comanche. - with respect / talon

The death of a way of life and history of loved ones, and country is a grief that can never be comforted. The Souix were once a great nation of very strong people and a great religion. That nation can be great again; many again with the Spirit of a great leader who bind them together agains as one unstoppable power and that power will start slow and build upon itself with pride of remembering your own fathers and their sacrifice for you. I pray this with all my heart to The Great One.
